Chaplain's Corner

Our Chaplain, Helen Toth, should be contacted by telephone as soon as possible after the death of a member. Please check your directory for her telephone number.

COMMUNICATING DEATH OF A COUNCIL MEMBER

This procedure should be followed when member dies. There may be unusual circumstances that may require a deviation from this plan and at those times, squads should do what they think is best. If squads need help resolving a delicate situation, they should call the State Chaplain.

The Council formally recognizes the death of an active, exempt, lifetime or probationary member. Former members, auxiliary members, honorary members and those who perform special duties for squads are not formally recognized by the Council.

  1. Upon the death of a squad member, the local squad Chaplain should:
    1. Advise the District chaplain of the squad members' death and provide spelling of a members name and date member passed away, if possible.
    2. Advise if services will be requested. If so, advise if service will be by:
      • The Squad
      • The Squad and District
      • The Squad, District and State
  2. The District Chaplain should:
    1. Assist the Squad Chaplain by notifying the District squads and officers as to the members death, plus time, place and date of service, if one is to to be held.
    2. Advise the State chaplain of:
Deceased members' name - proper spelling and squad affiliation.
If he/she sill be asked to attend or participate.
Be prepared to take part or conduct services if requested to do so.
  3. The State Chaplain will:
    1. If requested and if possible, attend services, guide the squad and/or District chaplain, participate in the services if asked to do so.
    2. Submit the deceased members' name and squad affiliation to the Gold Cross Magazine for publishing therein.
  4. We hold an annual memorial service for our members who have died during the year at our annual convention. Additionally, we would like to remember those of us who have answered the final call.

If you have any questions about our memorial service, you can e-mail our chaplain at chaplain@njsfac.org
