Alcohol Screening and Brief Intervention proposal
Public Comments accepted through April 30, 2008
Several significant steps have been taken in the last two years to promote
Alcohol Screening and Brief Intervention (SBI):
In 2006, the American College of Surgeons Committee on
Trauma established certification requirements for Trauma Centers,
requiring that Level I and II Trauma Centers must establish a
mechanism for screening patients and that Level I Trauma Centers must
also provide a brief intervention for patients identified as problem
drinkers.
In recent months, medical billing codes have been established for screening and brief intervention services for
purposes of reimbursement under Medicare, Medicaid and private
insurance carriers.
An additional, very significant step is now being undertaken. The Joint
Commission on Accreditation of Hospital Organizations (JCAHO) is
considering the establishment of an accreditation standard for screening
and brief intervention in all hospitals.
JCAHO is seeking public comment on this issue. If you wish to submit
